Letter from Mario Baroni
by Mario Baroni
Dear Readers
Over the last years our subscribers will have noticed that the issuing
of the Bollettino has been somewhat irregular (delays, special issues
in the place of ordinary ones etc.). This has not, in our opinion,
affected in any way the quality of the articles or the cultural scope
of the review and we have therefore decided to continue our
publication. However, difficulties in administrating and organizing the
work have led us to turn to a publisher: the LIM Editrice in Lucca. The
Bollettino will therefore no longer be just an "internal" publication
restricted to members, but will take on the characteristics of a true
and proper magazine.
At the same time, we have decided to make substantial changes in the
organization of the GATM. Since its establishment (1990) the GATM has
always been an "association of associations": its members were made up
of five Italian musicological societies (dealing with Musicology,
Ethnomusicology, Music Education, Informatics and Popular Music). From
this year individual members will also be accepted, with the right to
speak at assemblies and to contribute in the planning or modification
of the group’s activities. Those interested in receiving a
copy of the statute should write to: GATM Via Barberia 4 - 40123
Bologna, or send an email to:
baroni@muspe.unibo.it
The Bollettino will continue to be issued twice a year: one issue will
be dedicated (as always) to a monographic topic, and the second will
deal from year to year with Italian studies (selected from initiatives
set up by the GATM with the active contribution of its own members) or
with a systematic overview, in the clearest and most simple manner, of
the most recent foreign studies. The bibliography will no longer be
published in an issue of the Bollettino, as happened in the past, but
will be available for consultation in an on-line data base. Access to
the site will be free for GATM members. There are also plans for the
publication of a series of Manuals, again at a specially reduced price
for members. Those who become members of the GATM will automatically
have a subscription to the magazine, but not all subscribers will
necessarily have to belong to the GATM.
Two issues of the Bollettino are foreseen for this year. The first will
be dedicated to an anthology of papers by Italian authors prepared for
two Conferences: the 5th European Music Analysis Conference, held at
the University of Bristol from 4 to 7 April 2002 and the Secondo
Incontro di Studio di Analitica, which took place at the Conservatorio
di Castelfranco Veneto on 30 and 31 March 2001. The second issue (the
monographic one) will deal with the topic of analyzing songs and the
music of the masses in general, a theme seldom covered in Italy, but
quite common in Anglo-Saxon countries. The authors will include Allen
Forte (on the American popular ballad), Walter Everett (expressivity of
rock), Serge Lacasse ("poetics" of recording), Richard Middleton
(traditional musicology and the analysis of popular music), Rob Bowman
(a systematic example of the analysis of a piece).
