Call for papers

The Italian Society for Music Analysis and Theory - GATM (SIATM) and the “G. Martucci” Conservatory of Salerno are organizing the XXIII International Conference on Music Theory and Analysis. Scholars are invited to submit proposals on topics related to music theory and analysis, regardless of musical genre, historical period, or geographical area.
Proposals must be received by 10 July 2026, must be written in Italian and/or English, and submitted via Google Form https://forms.gle/PNiDe9y6yPgtLvbdA, using a personal Gmail account or one created for the occasion. All proposals will be subject to double anonymous review; notification of acceptance or rejection will be communicated by 25 July 2026.

Presentation Formats
a) Individual or multi-authored paper, 20 minutes plus 10 minutes of discussion;
b) Pre-organized session with three or four papers, each 20 minutes plus 10 minutes of discussion.

Official Languages of the Conference

The official languages of the Conference are Italian and English. To facilitate the understanding of presentations for non-native speakers, speakers may deliver their paper in one language and independently prepare a translation, even partial, into the other language in electronic (slide) or printed format.

Submission of Proposals

(a) Individual paper proposal (or multi-authored). The proposal must include three documents:
- an anonymous PDF file containing the title of the proposal, an abstract of no more than 500 words with a maximum of two additional pages of examples, a bibliography of at most 5 titles, and 5 keywords;
- a DOCX file containing an abstract of at most 300 words prepared using the template at:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DkXeDtFEpDg-OP58aNFb75lIdKND22t5/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=103716224368566716888&rtpof=true&sd=true (The document will be used, in the event of acceptance, for publication in the Abstract Book; it must contain no footnotes, examples, or tables, and must have a bibliography limited to 5 titles);
- a DOCX file containing name and surname, any institutional affiliation, and a short CV (maximum 150 words).

(b) Pre-organized session proposal

The proposal must be submitted by the session organizer and must include files with the same characteristics as in (a) for each paper included in the session. In addition, the organizer must submit a DOCX file containing a presentation of the session as a whole (maximum 300 words).

Registration Fees for Speakers and Participants

a) Speakers

All speakers must be registered for the Conference. Registration fees are as follows:

Conference registration fees must be paid by bank transfer made out to "Società Italiana di Analisi e Teoria Musicale – GATM aps", IBAN: IT43O0760102400000023163405, with the payment reference "iscrizione Salerno 2026". 

b) Non-presenting participants

It is possible to participate as a non-presenting participant for the entire duration of the Conference or for individual days by paying the relevant fee by bank transfer or directly at the Conference venue. Fees are as follows:

Attendance of students and faculty of the “G. Martucci” Conservatory of Salerno as speakers or participants is free of charge. 

The Conference with and for Students

Students from Conservatories and Universities are particularly encouraged to present their thesis work and original research in music theory/analysis, indicating their student status when submitting the proposal. Young students may apply for one of the scholarships made available by the Italian Society for Music Analysis and Theory - GATM.  The scholarship regulations are available at this link.
