Coerenza strutturale in Revolution 9. Musica concreta e hook tra sogni e realta?

Andrea Taroppi - pag. 93-121

Revolution 9 is undoubtedly an atypical song within The Beatles’ production. Aim of this article is to investigate the song’s consistency both within itself and within the context of The Beatles’ song output through spectrogram and sonomorpholo- gical analysis, exploring the sound objects and their organization along the time axis and inside the soundbox. The analysis demonstrates that Revolution 9 has several elements that show a specific structural organization, such as the use of the golden ratio or the regularity in the appearance of the «Number nine» loop. Again, loo- king for something strictly related to the universe of popular music, we can see the same «Number nine» loop as a hook, which, as usual in Beatles’ songs, appears for the first time immediately after the introduction. Beyond these analytical consisten- cies, the article proposes then an interpretation which takes into consideration the atypical elements and read Revolution 9 as a metaphor of Lennon’s life at the time: the starting of his new relationship with Yoko Ono and the approaching of the end of the sixties and The Beatles’ dream.
